I am not a doctor! But these are some things that have worked for me.
If you have complications or continued symptoms please consult a doctor.

CALIFLOWER EAR

The ear basically consists of three layers, two layers of skin with cartilage in the middle.
Cauliflower ear occurs when the ear is traumatized by folding, twisting, or by an impact, "from strikes". The skin is then pulled away from the cartilage on ether the back side or front side of the ear. Fluid files the space between the skin and cartilage. After about 3 days the fluid starts to congeal and slowly turns to cartilage. The key to preventing cauliflower ear is to minimize the situations that cause ear trauma. Some common causes are pulling your head out of headlocks in side mount and north south position and fighting out of triangles while not paying attention to your ears.

The key to treating cauliflower ear is to catch it early. When you notice pain in your ear make it a habit to check the area for swelling or fluid. You generally have 3 days to catch it before the fluid between the cartilage and skin of the ear starts to congeal and then it cannot be drained.
The hardest part of healing the ear is not the draining, but keeping the skin pressed against the cartilage so that it can reattach, and grow back together. This can take a week or more. Packing the ear with cotton and taping the cotton to the ear to keep the skin of the ear pressed to the cartilage is essential, especially while sleeping. Grappling with headgear is a must while the ear is healing. Ask your training partners if you can borrow one. It’s likely that at least a couple of the blue and purple belts have had to wear one at one point or another.
Be vigilant the first couple of days to keep the ear drained and packed with cotton.

Get a pack or two of insulin syringes, aprox. $3 and a bottle of bentadine from any pharmacy.
Insulin syringes have very small needles, so don’t sweat it. Our core workout is far more painful!!
Use bentadine; it is much better than rubbing alcohol at killing any staff bacteria on the skin.
P.S. do not do this without disinfecting the ear!!

Jammed toes and fingers
Ice is your friend. A general rule for ice is; "10 minutes every hour, when possible". If there is a lot of inflammation, you can take 200 mg of ibuprofen 3 times daily for up to 10 days. I am not a doctor, but this works well for myself and many others. Read the label of the bottle. Ice and anti inflammatory medication such as ibuprofen can cut the healing time down and get you back on the mat quicker. You should wait 4 days after an injury before you use heat. Heat does not help to reduce inflammation. Less inflammation equals quicker healing.

Low back pain
One of the main goals in my school is to keep all of my student’s backs healthy for life. As I have had more than my share of problems with my back due to a boating accident years ago, I want to spare you this pain and frustration!
The best cure is prevention. The road to prevention is understanding.
Strengthening the core of the body brings about power. Power in your transitions, power in holding and escaping positions, and powerful takedowns.
If your core is weak, you will compensate with bad form when grappling, and cause injury.
Having strong arms and legs will help you prevent injury to your arms and legs but not to everything ells.
Pardon the analogy, but, if a battle ship has 2 strong guns at either end of the ship, but the body of the ship is rusted and weak, the waves will eventually break it in half; its just a matter of time.

Body awareness is key! When rolling, especially when rolling, pay attention to pain or anything unusual in your back. Most back condition can be prevented from becoming worse if you just increase your awareness. Our core workout will make you more stable and resilient, but it takes time to build this.

One thing that has worked well for many people suffering low back pain is to elevate your legs on a chair so that your back is flat on the ground and your legs are raised up at a right angle. This reduces low back disc pressure and can promote proper alignment in the back. Do this for at least 15 minutes. Sometimes I will do this for an hour, and put an ice pack under my back for 15 minutes.
